US Army Marketplace

Cool – a project that I’m working on got a mention on Engadget and The Verge.

Army Software Marketplace offers shortcuts to approved iOS apps:

The US Army might be in the process of building its own tightly controlled smartphone (along with other government agencies), but it’s also taking a more straightforward approach when it comes to delivering training materials to soldiers’ devices. The recently launched Army Software Marketplace is a mobile website that curates training apps developed by the Army’s Connecting Soldiers to Digital Apps (CSDA) program. But rather than distribute the apps, as the name might imply, it simply offers links to download the apps in the iOS App Store. This means that everything in the Army Software Marketplace is readily available to the public; the website just makes it easier to find them.

The Miami Marlins have the worst uniforms

How awful. Even MLB Gameday on the iPad has the garish representation. (Thankfully not optimized for retina displays.)

Adobe Photoshop CS6 Beta

What a gorgeous interface. Once you get past the garish splash screen (pictured below), you’re presented with one slick workspace.

Now, having done a lot of web development, I prefer darker colors. I’m staring at a 27″ iMac all day, so having something that’s easier on my eyes is a welcome change:

I can now (FINALLY!) paste hex color values with the leading hash. This is going to save me more time than I’d care to document — it was a major pain in my ass for the longest time.

iPad thoughts and first impressions

So I’ve had about 5 full days on the iPad … color me impressed. While it can’t replace my primary computer (either a 13″ MacBook Air or a 27″ iMac) for design and development activities, it can’t be beat for stuff like email, browsing the intarwebs, streaming movies, playing games, etc.

The most impressive thing, though, is the battery technology that allowed me to use the iPad off the initial charge for the entire weekend. In fact, I had to stream Netflix at full brightness on Sunday night just to drain the battery so I could start the conditioning process with an overnight charge — pretty efficient, I’d say!

Further, I took the iPad with me to work yesterday and streamed Spotify for about 3 hours (note: Spotify needs an iPad app, pronto), took some notes, sketched a little with Penultimate … And only dinged the fully-charged battery for 11% — are you kidding me?!

The only gripe I have is that it’s nearly impossible to have one iPad for a family. We have apps for my daughter on the iPad, but because I use the Facebook app, my wife needs to access Facebook via the web, Twitter using the web or a different client, etc. The iPad is such a personal device, and doesn’t lend itself well to sharing. For Apple, that’s a great problem: it means that we’ll likely have another iPad soon.

Finally, some movement!

With great trees come great responsibility

I love this tree so much, but raking flowers in the spring and leaves in the fall kind of sucks.

Still, though, she’s a gorgeous tree.

The best use for my AIGA membership card

I paid $315/year and now have the best means to open the gate to my parking lot at work – no more fiddling with a gate card in my wallet. No sir! Now I just slap my AIGA card into the reader and have unlimited entrance/exit privileges.

Finally, a practical use for the AIGA Membership Card!
