Love this time of year.
31 feels old
For whatever reason, turning 30 didn’t phase me. It was no big deal – almost as if to say “hey, late twenties – go fuck yourself. I’m mature now.”
But 31? Different story. I just feel, well, old.
I’m not alone in this, am I?
Today’s $60 1TB drive would have cost $1 trillion in the ’50s
Amazing. And here I am ready to upgrade my Macbook Pro’s 160GB drive to a 120GB SSD and swap out my optical drive for a 1TB 7200 RPM drive for less than $400.
iTunes slowdowns with Google DNS
So, as the story goes…
Last night we tried to rent an iTunes movie on our newish Apple TV. Instead of starting right away, the Apple TV said it would be 2+ hours before we could start watching. I’ve got a healthy 15-20Mb/s connection and a clean wire to the Apple TV, so this shouldn’t be happening.
A little bit of research turned up a surprising fix: Don’t use Google DNS.

The Open Internet
A great explanation of why Net Neutrality is important. To wit:
Network neutrality is the idea that your cellular, cable, or phone internet connection should treat all websites and services the same. Big companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast want to treat them differently so they can charge you more depending on what you use.
Farm animals get 80% of antibiotics sold in the United States
That’s about 60% more than I thought.
30 inches of snow in 30 seconds
Great timelapse video of the blizzard pounding the east coast. 30 inches of snow in 30 seconds!
White Christmas
The view from our master bedroom is pretty nice — probably 30-40 feet above the street.
Nothing but bug, fluffy snowflakes in St. Louis!
